Baking the Perfect Pumpkin Pie

So in November of 2018 JT and I were newly newly-weds! We’d been married for less than three full weeks when Thanksgiving rolled around. And as we all now pumpkin pie is the dessert of choice for Thanksgiving!

Now to be clear, JT loves pumpkin pie. Like in contest between pumpkin pie and me there’s a possibility I might not win. But since our first big holiday as husband and wife was Thanksgiving we decided to make pumpkin pie together! I was soooo prepared to win the #bestwifeever award by dazzling him with my baking skills. I even specifically put on my Wifey for Lifey sweater to add to the overall cuteness!

Together we preheated the oven, made the filling, broke a few eggs, and rolled out the pie crust. The only thing left to do was put everything in the pan! Can you see where this is going? Y’all we did NOT own a pie tin. So we had all the pieces of pumpkin pie, but no pie… Yeah, that’s not how I imagined that going!

I shared this story on my Instagram. Then two of my friends were so sweet, and they sent us pie tins! So this year, we decided to try again! I planned every step literally weeks in advance. I didn’t want any repeats! And well that probably wasn’t necessary, I am so glad that I did! Of course last year JT was a good sport and was super sweet about the lack of pie! But this year we were able to make a delicious treat together! Although we had a hiccup… we mixed all of the spices into a separate bowl. Then we forgot to add that bowl into the mix before the mixture went into the pie crust. So we ended up mixing it in inside the pie crust! Oops!

When people have asked me what the first year of marriage has been like this is always the story I tell. It’s a funny antidote. No one was seriously hurt. And life moved on. But to me it was so much more than that. It was learning to accept that the “perfect wife” wasn’t a stereotype I could (or wanted to) achieve.

Imagine that scene in Mulan where she is singing about how she’ll never be the perfect daughter. That was me. But as a wife. But you know what happened when I let go of the idea of perfection? We laughed about the mistake, we went out and bought dessert together, and our partnership got stronger.  And this year we conquered the pumpkin pie!
