3 Ways To Take Photos in Public (by yourself)

Can I share a secret with you? To this day I still feel uncomfortable when I ask strangers to take a photo of me. Don’t get me wrong. Some of my favorite photos have been taken by strangers. When we go places like Disneyland or the beach it can be better to ask someone else to take them because those places are more crowded! But I always get super nervous before asking. Especially now when we’re all trying to social distance it’s harder than ever to take photos in public! So here are 3 ways to take photos in public (by yourself). These tips work best in places that aren’t super crowded!

  1. Set up a collapsible tripod. This way is one of the easiest ways because you can set up the tripod, stand back, and let the self timer do it’s thing! You can also use a bluetooth trigger to take the photo.
  1. Find somewhere to prop your phone as a makeshift tripod. I’ve been known to set my phone against trash cans, water bottles, and my purse to get the perfect angle.
  1. Flip the script. Quite literally. Instead of taking a photo of yourself flip your camera around and take a photo of your environment. You can use these for image headers, backgrounds for stories, backgrounds for quotes, wallpapers, and so much more.

Just remember when you’re taking photos in public you’re in public! So be respectful of the people around you. Don’t set your tripod up in the middle of the sidewalk. Don’t be really loud or distracting. Treat public spaces the way you want other people to treat them! And remember, always leave it better than you found it. We brought a trash bag to the park and we picked up any extra trash we saw laying on the ground to throw away!

I hope this inspires you to get out there and start taking more photos!
